Space cell biology is emerging as a key discipline and NASA is at the forefront of this scientific evolution, providing the means to conduct research in many gravitational environments. NASA offers a range of opportunities to help investigators conduct world-class, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed research.
NASA offers collaborative and funding opportunities to the academic, government, and commercial community. This fosters a national community of investigators and technology developers who help to advanced the activities of the Biological Systems Office (BSO) at NASA Johnson Space Center.

Each year, NASA releases research announcements, cooperative agreement notices, broad agency announcements, and other formal mechanisms for working with NASA. Less formal agreements for work between NASA personnel and their colleagues in academia, government, or industry are also possible.
NASA also offers opportunities through its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Programs (STTR) programs. Both of these programs allow small businesses (and, in the case of STTRs, their institutional partners) to offer a specific innovation or solution that meets NASA's needs and shows commercial potential.
Occasionally, Space Act Agreements are used. These permit NASA and outside organizations to share resources, such as expertise, equipment, manpower, etc. This mechanism does not allow NASA to provide funds to an outside organization.
Please note that NASA opportunities are subject to the competitive process. BSO does not control contract funds nor does it influence selection.
