About the BSO - Site Contents

The BSO site addresses our activities in research and technology development, while also providing insight into biotechnology activities at NASA and ways to collaborate with us.  Read below to learn more about each section of the site.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is an exciting collaboration between the biological sciences, engineering, and biochemistry to investigate the building blocks of the living body.  BSO specializes in cell culture technology:

  • Engineering tissue for research;
  • Growing cells and tissue for disease studies;
  • Using microorganisms and cell design to create new drugs and drug delivery methods;
  • Exploring how gravity affects cell growth and gene expression; and
  • Providing the facilities necessary to conduct biotechnology research

Advanced Technology

Space travel poses numerous challenges to human health and productivity.  Future, long-duration space travel beyond Earth orbit will depend on technologies that will help us meet and surmount those challenges.  The BSO is dedicated to the development and use of advanced technologies that will enable the next generation of space flight.  Ground-based and flight bioreactors yield important insight into cell and tissue development.  The BSO-supported research also contributes to next-generation medical technologies, like implantable sensors that monitor health from inside the body.
